Lotus

How long and long the beautiful lotus takes!
It takes longer for its leaves to get withered, and for its stems to get tangled and broken up one by one than the time when it was a beautiful flower in full blossom.  

How far and far away the beautiful lotus goes!
The flower fades far away like death.
At the age of almost 70, I just realize that our unfathomable life as well as even the one single line drawn on the icy pond have cause and effect.  

What a deep and deep beautiful lotus!
What a mysterious lotus!
You are me, and I am you!

길고도 길다
연당에 꽃이 주연인 시절보다
잎새 시들어 줄기 엉키고
종내에는 물속에서 올올이 풀어져 해체되기까지

멀고도 멀다
사람들은 꽃 스러진 시절을 죽음이라 부르는데
이제보니 그것은 미처 헤아리지 못한 우리네 삶
얼음 위에 그어진 선 하나조차 인과(cause and result)인 것을
70이 낼모레인 이제야 알아차리니

깊고도 깊다
자연의 오묘함이여
연이 인생이고 내가 연이다.
