Disappearing zoos

There was a time when animals were kept in small cages and people were allowed to watch them. Nowadays, zoos are almost a thing of the past, thanks to animal cruelty controversies. Instead, animals are released in large spaces that are more like their natural habitat, and people can go on safaris to see them. Even if there is a cage, the space is much larger than in the past, allowing the animals to move freely. Therefore, the small zoos that used to be operated by kwan have almost disappeared.
There was also a zoo in Busan. It was Geumgang Zoo in Geumgang Park. It opened in 1967 and operated for 35 years before closing in 2002. Those who grew up in Busan during this time must have been there at least once. The facilities and spaces look shabby now. However, it was also a favorite place for children’s days and picnics.

동물을 좁은 우리 안에 가두어 놓고 사람들에게 관람을 시키는 시절이 있었다. 지금은 동물원이라는 명칭의 공원은 거의 사라지고 없다. 왜냐면 동물 학대 논란이 제기되면서부터. 대신 실제 자연과 같은 넓은 공간에 동물을 방사해놓고 사파리 형식으로 관람시키고 있다. 설사 우리가 있다고 해도 과거보다 훨씬 넓은 공간을 확보해서 동물들이 자유롭게 활동할 수 있도록 해놨다. 그러다 보니 관이 운영했던 예전의 작은 동물원들은 거의 다 사라지고 없다.
부산에도 동물원이 있었다. 금강공원내에 있었던 금강동물원이다. 1967년 문을 열어 35년간 운영하다 2002년에 폐쇄했다. 이 시기에 부산에서 어린 시절을 보냈던 사람들이라면 한 번쯤은 가봤을 것이다. 지금 보면 시설이나 공간들이 허접해 보인다. 그러나 어린이날 혹은 소풍 때면 빠지지 않고 찾았던 곳이기도 하다.
동물원 작업은 사라져가는 부산의 풍경을 기록하고 있는 시리즈 작업의 일환으로 촬영된 사진들이다.
