KHLONG: Bangkok’s waterways

People lived their lives around KHLONG with water. Nowadays, few people farm in Bangkok, but waterways are still an important part of life for Bangkokians.
When I came to Bangkok as a traveler, I was interested in the city, but after living in Bangkok for 18 years as an office worker, I lost interest in everything beyond the familiarity. Then one day, I passed by a river on my way home from work. At that time, I noticed the sky and water turning orange, and the Bangkok people naturally using the waterway next to it. Suddenly, the sight felt very beautiful yet unfamiliar.
Since then, I’ve been documenting waterways in every corner of Bangkok. In recent years, many of the KHLONG have been rehabilitated, and some are no longer the same, but the KHLONG are still an important part of Bangkok’s life.
People use boats to commute to work, run or walk along the KHLONG for exercise, and visit waterfront temples to make offerings, release fish into the water, and pray. Children use KHLONG as playgrounds to swim and play with their friends, and there are still a large number of floating markets. Families without access to running water use the river as a source of domestic water and live alongside the KHLONG.
In November, a big festival called Loy Krathong is held. On the full moon, boats are floated down the river to pray to the water gods for happiness. Water is an integral part of life in Thailand.
I wanted to photograph the KHLONG of Bangkok and the people who live alongside them in order to reflect on the source of life for Bangkokians, an important but often overlooked aspect of their daily lives.

방콕은 물의 도시이다. 1782년 방콕에 수도를 정한 짜끄리왕조는 짜오프라야 강 주변을 중심으로 발전하기 시작했다. 현재 방콕의 50개의 구(區)이름 모두가 하천의 이름을 따르고 있다는 것은 예로부터 농경사회 였던 태국에서 물길을 중요시 했음을 엿볼 수 있는 부분이다.
사람들은 물이 있는 강, 하천 주변에서 삶을 영위하였다. 이제 방콕에서 농사를 짓는 사람은 거의 없지만 방콕 사람들에게 물길은 여전히 중요한 삶의 터전이다.
여행자로 방콕에 왔을 때는 관심이 가던 방콕의 모습이 생활인으로 방콕에 18년을 살다 보니 익숙함을 넘어 모든 것에 심드렁해질때 쯤, 퇴근시간에 우연히 하천 옆을 지나가게 되었다. 그때 주황색으로 물드는 하늘과 물 그리고 그 옆에서 자연스럽게 물길을 이용하는 방콕 사람들이 눈에 들어왔다. 갑자기 그 모습이 참 아름다우면서도 낯설게 느껴졌다.
그 후 방콕 구석구석의 물길을 찾아다니며 기록을 했다. 몇 년 사이 이미 많은 하천에서 복개 공사가 이루어져 옛 모습을 찾아볼 수 없는 곳도 있었으나, 방콕의 물길은 여전히 방콕사람들에게 중요한 삶의 터전이었다.
사람들은 하천의 배를 이용해서 출퇴근을 하고 하천을 따라 달리거나 걸으며 운동을 하고 물가에 있는 절에 가서 공양을 드린 뒤에 물가에 물고기를 방생 하며 기도를 드린다. 아이들은 하천을 놀이터 삼아 수영을 하며 친구들과 놀고, 여전히 많은 수의 수상시장이 운영되고 있다. 그리고 상수도 시설이 갖춰지지 않은 가정에서는 하천물을 길어 가정수로 사용하며 하천과 함께 살아가고 있다.
11월이 되면 러이끄라통이라는 큰 축제가 열린다. 보름 날 강물 위로 배를 띄워 보내며 물의 신에게 행복을 기원하는 행사이다. 그만큼 태국에서 물은 삶에서 뗄 수 없는 중요한 부분인 것이다. 중요하지만 지극히 일상적이어서 관심을 두지 않았던 방콕에서의 하천, 그리고 그 하천과 함께 살아가는 사람들의 모습을 통해 방콕 사람들의 삶의 근원에 대해서 생각해 보고자 촬영을 하게 되었다.
