Gangnam, once a suburban district, has transformed into a bustling metropolis, its growth mirroring South Korea’s rapid economic development in the 1970s. The construction of the Gyeongbu Expressway and the subsequent influx of affluent families seeking quality education established Gangnam as a premier residential area.
This photographic series captures the everyday life of Gangnam’s residents. From the orderly rows of luxury apartments to the bustling streets lined with schools and amenities, the images offer a glimpse into a world of privilege and convenience. Yet, beneath the surface of affluence, there exists a harmonious coexistence of the past, present, and future.
Through my lens, I aim to document the ordinary moments that shape Gangnam’s identity. From the school buses that ferry children to their various activities to the mothers navigating the neighborhood’s amenities, each image reveals the intricate tapestry of daily life. These photographs serve as a testament to the enduring human spirit and the complexities of urban life in one of Asia’s most dynamic cities.
With a focus on capturing the ordinary moments of everyday life, I use photography to explore the visual narratives of Gangnam. My images offer a unique perspective on the district’s architecture, its residents, and the rhythms of its daily life. Through my lens, I aim to create a visual tapestry that reflects the multifaceted nature of this urban landscape.
