Namdaemun Market

Seoul’s oldest marketplace, Namdaemun Market, stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. Its weathered brick walls bear the scars of six centuries, each crack and stain telling a story of resilience and change.
Surrounded by towering skyscrapers that seem to watch over the market with a detached gaze, Namdaemun Market remains relatively untouched by the forces of modernization. The older buildings, adorned with faded signs, coexist harmoniously within their own unique spaces.
In the bustling streets, I see glimpses of the past – the excitement of a young student seeking a coveted cassette player. Even today, the market retains its ability to evoke nostalgia and a sense of familiarity.
Unlike the fleeting nature of many modern businesses, Namdaemun Market has endured. It serves as a repository not only of historical artifacts but also of personal memories. The saying, “If it’s not in Namdaemun Market, it’s nowhere to be found in Seoul,” rings truer than ever.
